Queensland's commercial net fisheries are multi-species fisheries, with fishers targeting different species at different times of the year.
Gulf of Carpentaria inshore fin fish fishery
The Gulf of Carpentaria inshore fin fish fishery harvests mainly tropical species, such as:
- king and blue threadfins - 17% of total net catch
- barramundi - 30% of total net catch
- barred javelin - 0.5% of total net catch
- shark - 11% of total net catch
- grey mackerel - 3% of total net catch.
East coast inshore fin fish fishery
The northern areas of the east coast inshore fin fish fishery harvests mainly tropical species, such as:
- king and blue threadfins - 7% of total net catch
- barramundi - 6% of total net catch
- shark - 9% of total net catch
- grey mackerel - 3% of total net catch.
The southern areas of the east coast inshore fin fish fishery harvests mainly subtropical fin fish species, such as:
- mullet
- tailor
- whiting
- flathead
- bream
- mulloway
- school mackerel.
