Food

There must be strict control of feed consumption by birds, as the feeding system can be altered by the presence of coarse grains and undesirable herbs since by their characteristics these birds must consume besides grains, herbs, and other fibrous foods.

Usage

The Cubalaya chicken’s usefulness is the production of eggs, but beyond consumption, laying eggs is also for the conservation of the species. This breed also serves for the production of its meat. Farmers take the Cubalaya chicken breed to exhibitions because of their feathers.

Special Feature

The Cubalaya Chicken is in danger of extinction and its specimens barely exceed one thousand, due to genetic erosion, a process that threatens 30 percent of the world’s domestic animals. With the aim of helping this species not to be extinguished, the sub-group of Gallinaceae of the National Ornithological Association of Cuba directs its work to the propagation among the breeders of all the provinces of the country.

It is a very favorable moment for the excellent reception that has had the lovers and creators. According to observations by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), genetic erosion has extinguished species by missing out on genetic traits within them by unordered crossbreeding.

In tune with international agreements to conserve biological biodiversity subscribed by Cuba, the genetic stumps created by the ACPA protect, among other types of animals, the Cubalaya, a mica race of chicken whose Cuban origin is recognized in the world.
