Do Ducks Make Good Pets?
In case you haven't heard, ducks can make pretty awesome pets! That's right; these birds are smart, playful, and can be extremely loyal and loving if you give them the proper care and attention.
You may never have thought about owning a duck as a pet, or perhaps you've always wanted one, either way, you can make having a pet duck a reality if you keep a few things in mind.
- Ducklings require special care. It's best to adopt your ducky as a youngster, since they're not familiar with humans and may need more time to adjust. Your newly hatched pet will need extra special care these first few weeks. Ducklings should be kept inside and warm in roughly 80–85 degrees. This may require a heat bulb and cozy box as a temporary ducky home!
- Ducks should be adopted in pairs. If you've already picked out a name for your duckling, you should plan on picking out a second name, because ducks are best adopted as pets in multiples. Ducks are super social animals and like being with their own kind. If you don't get your ducky a pal, he or she will likely be lonely and depressed.
- Ducks should be kept outside. Apart from their first few weeks of life when their feathers are still coming in, ducks, for the most part, should be kept outside. These are outdoor animals and enjoy the outside lifestyle. This is no pet for an apartment! A small shelter with clean straw, a fenced-in grassy area, and plenty of clean water is a perfect environment for your new ducky buddies!
