Checking the internet, Kevin Storms was surprised that no one had ever posted the type of conversion he was thinking about for his farm truck endgate. Factory-made models he found did not retain the original stake pocket look. To get what he wanted, “it was kind of engineer on the fly,” he says.
Storms determined a way to hinge the doors. (See photos below.)
“I added an upright support on the right side and hinged the third panel farthest to the right,” he says.
He added lengths of vertical 1.5×3-inch rectangular steel tubing for hinge points and two pieces of horizontal 1.5×3-inch tubing to increase the stiffness and strength over the grain door.
“I added a hinged 2×6-inch steel header to mount to the top door latches and put filler plates over the original stake pockets,” he says.
Storms ([email protected]) estimates he spent $550 total on the metal, hinges, and latch systems for the project. “All the parts were off the shelf,” he says.
