Mahindra is engineering tractors with the aim to be No. 1 in sales of compact, compact utility, and utility tractors (ranging in power from 19.4 to 120 hp.) in North America. While that may be a tall order to fill, bear in mind that Mahindra is the largest producer of tractors in the world. By August, the company had already built just short of 150,000 tractors for the year worldwide.
The quality of tractors it is introducing to the U.S. market, the Models 5145 and 5155, represent a ruggedness, work capacity, and fit and finish not seen in Mahindra tractor in the past. “These are as good a tractor as you’ll find on the market today,” brags Viren Popli, president of Mahindra Ag North America regarding the new 5100 series tractors.
Mahindra is backing that brag up with an industry-leading five-year, 3,000-hour limited powertrain warranty that covers parts and labor.
Ranging in engine power from 45 hp. to 55 hp., the two new tractors are powered by a Mahindra-built common rail diesel (CRD) platform designed to eliminate a diesel particular filter (DPF). That powerplant is paired with a 12-speed (forward and reverse) synchromesh transmission. A total hydraulic output of 8.71 gallons per minute backs up an accompanying Mahindra loader’s 3,100-pound lift capacity (at full height).
“We are certain this will be the new class leader in the 30- to 50-hp. segment,” claims Matt Glen of Mahindra. “The 5100 has gone through a series of tests and evaluations before its release. We ‘seeded,’ or provided these tractors to a wide variety of operators across the country as part of a prerelease evaluation of the models to prove out their performance."
Backing up the tractors are considerable resources, Popli adds. “We are a $19.4-billion company that has been around for 75 years. Mahindra employs nearly 250,000 people across the world,” he adds. “This supports our ability to engineer and build high-quality products.”
