Day One’s plant is Eryngium ‘Neptune’s Gold’. It can be found in the New Horizons Garden at Hampton Court, designed by Beautiful Borders Garden Design.
A sun-loving perennial with spiky bracts that are an unmissable bright green, it really is an unmissable plant at this year’s show. The sharpness of the golden bracts with the gold-edged leaves, which are purply/blue in the centre, contrast with the soft blue of the flowerheads. It is a tremendous ‘value for money’ plant that does the work of more than one plant in a border.
It pairs well with ‘softer’ plants such as penstemon and agastache and loves to grow in soil that drains very well. If you have sandy soil in the garden or a sunny gravel garden area, you are on to a winner.
Reaching 50cm in height it is best planted at the front of a planting display, where it will act as a real zingy show off along the edge of a path or border.
If you want to look at the spiky stems for as long as possible, cut some and bring them into the house and dry them- they will make a very long-lasting dried flower display.
