Solar lights are inexpensive and simple to install, but are they the best choice for your outdoor space? According to real‑estate specialist Crystal Olenbush, interviewed by House Digest, the answer is often no. She cautions that a proliferation of generic solar fixtures can make a landscape look bland and commercial.

Instead, Olenbush recommends a “layered lighting” strategy that highlights key features—such as a stately tree near the driveway or a characterful wall—using a mix of ambient, accent, and task lights. “Luxury homes thrive on a gentle, ambient glow punctuated by a few strategically placed fixtures that draw the eye to focal points,” she says.

Layered lighting is not only a popular trend in interior design; it is becoming the go‑to approach for exterior illumination. Shifting from minimalist to more personality‑driven spaces, designers use layers to add depth and warmth, translating that cozy ambiance outdoors.

That said, solar lighting isn’t obsolete. Solar‑powered fixtures remain handy for paths, steps, or other areas where wiring is impractical. However, in a curated, dimensional setting, a simple bundle of solar path lights can look too sparse and generic.

Layering relies on lights at multiple levels: overhead string lights, path lamps, spotlights for focal points, and wall sconces for down‑lighting. The result is a warm, integrated glow that feels intentional rather than merely functional. Solar lights can still play a role—for example, illuminating a distant walk—while hardwired lanterns, stair‑mounted fixtures and plugged‑in string lights complete the scene.

Control is another advantage of a mixed approach. Solar units often have a single brightness level that turns on automatically at dusk, limiting customization. With hardwired and plug‑in fixtures you can choose dimmable bulbs, dimmers or smart‑control systems, giving you the flexibility to set the mood at any time.
