There are many goat breeds available in India depending on the geographical location. However, in this article, let us discuss popular goat breeds and their profiles, characteristics, and performances. The goat rearing in India is helping urban areas as this is very profitable and anybody can start from the low investment.

Osmanabadi Goat Breed:
- This Goat Breed is mainly found in Maharashtra and neighboring states of Telangana and Karnataka.
- Osmanabadi goat coat color is predominantly black. However, sometimes white, brown and spotted will be found.
- These goats are the long and short-haired type, based on the presence or absence of long hair on the thighs and hindquarters.
- This goat has a tall and large size body and legs.
- This goat breed birth weight is about 2.5 kg.
- Usually, Osmanabadi goats give birth once a year.
- Fist kidding can happen at the age of 18 to 20 months and twinning is very common and triplets are possible.
- The Osmanabadi breed is raised for both meat and milk. The average milk yield is about 3 to 3.5 kg/day/goat.
- Usually, an adult male Osmanabadi goat weighs about 32 to 36 kg whereas a female Osmanabadi goat weighs about 30 to 32 kg.

Sirohi Goat Breed:
- This breed is mainly found in the state of Rajasthan and surrounding regions.
- Sirohi breed coat color is brown, white & admixture of colors in patches and their hair coarse and short.
- These goats have a compact and medium sized body.
- These goats tail twisted and carries coarse pointed hair.
- This breed has small sized horns and pointed curved upward and backward direction.
- A male Sirohi goat average body weight is about 50 kg and a female goat is about 25 to 30 kg.
- The birth weight of Sirohi goat is about 2 to 2.5 kg.
- This breed gives birth once a year and twinning are very common.
- Usually, they start kidding at 19 to 20 months of age.
- These breed goats have a lactation period of 6 months and the average lactation yield is 70 to 75 kg/lactation period.

Black Bengal Goat Breed:
- This breed is mainly found in Bengal and Bangladesh regions.
- This breed coat color is predominantly black, brown/grey and white with soft, glossy and short hairs.
- Usually, these goats are short, straight back and both male and female goats are bearded.
- An adult male black Bengal goat weighs about 15 to 16 kg and female goat weighs about 12 kg.
- This breed is most prolific among the Indian goat breeds.
- In Black-Bengal goats, twinning, triplets are common.
- These goats kid twice a year and the average litter size is about 2.0.
- This breed comes to kidding at an early stage compared to other goat breeds. Average age at first kidding is 9 to 10 months.
- These goats have 3 to 4 months of lactation period in which average lactation yield can be expected is 50 to 55 kg.

Jamunapari Goat Breed:
- This breed is mostly found in the state of Uttar Pradesh and surroundings.
- This goat breed is largest of the long-legged goats available in India.
- This breed mostly is seen in white color and black markings at ears and neck.
- Both males (bucks) and females (does) are beard and will possess long hairs on buttocks.
- This breed has short & flat horns which are horizontally twisting backward.
- When it comes to the height, this breed adult male goats will reach the height up to 100 cm whereas an adult female goat will attain the height up to 75 cm.
- This breed matured adult male goats will weigh about 65 to 75 kg whereas an adult matured female goat will weigh about 45 to 60 kg.
- This breed is very tall and leggy with a convex face and large folded pendulous ears. The ears of these goats are large and drooped downwards.
- Generally, average weight at birth would about 3 to 4 kg.
- This breed gives birth at the age of 20 to 24 months.
- These goats have large udder and they yield the lactation period of 9 months.
- On average, these goats give milk of 2 to 3 kg daily.
- This breed has very good fat content (up to 4.0 %) when compared with other breeds.

Tellicherry or Malabar Goat Breed:
- This breed is mainly found in the state of Kerala.
- Tellicherry goat also called as a Malabari goat.
- Tellicherry goat breed is mainly reared for meat purpose.
- This breed is usually seen in white, purple & black colors.
- Tellicherry male goat (buck) weighs about 45 to 50 kg and female goat (doe) weighs about 35 to 40 kg.
- These breed goats yield 1 to 2 kg milk/day.
- This goat breed has excellent reproductive capabilities and twinning and triplets are possible.

Barbari Goat Breed:
- This goat breed is mostly found in the regions of Delhi, Gurgaon, Uttar Pradesh, Panipat, Karnal and Rohtak in the state of Haryana.
- These goats are short haired and erect-horned.
- Generally, these goats are seen in white with light brown patches.
- An adult male goat (buck) weighs about 35 to 45 kg whereas an adult female goat (doe) weighs about 25 to 35 kg.
- This breed can give up to 1.5 kg of milk/day during the lactation period of 110 days.
- These goats have good reproductive capabilities and can give birth to twins and triplets.
- This goat breed is more prolific and gives birth twice in 12 to 15 months.
- These goats can be adopted into a stall-fed system very easily.
Beetal Goat Breed:
- This got breed is mostly found in the state of Punjab and Haryana.
- This breed is reared for both meat and milk.
- Generally, these breeds of goats are smaller when compared to Jamunapari.
- These breed goats are seen in the color of black, brown with white spots.
- Male goats (bucks) will have a beard.
- These breed goats weigh about 2.5 kg at the time of birth.
- An adult male goat of this breed will weigh about 45 to 65 kg whereas an adult female goat (doe) weigh about 35 to 45 kg.
- This breed starts kidding at the age of 20 to 24 months.
- The average lactation period in Beetal goats is about 6 months. These goats yield about 1 to 2 kg of milk daily.
Kanni Adu Goat Breed:
- These breed goats are mainly found in the state of Tamil Nadu and these are the tallest goats found in the state.
- These goats have a high degree of tolerance in drought conditions and grow well in the drought areas.
- These goats are usually seen in black or white spots.
- These goats are reared for meat purpose.
- An adult male goat weighs about 35 to 40 kg whereas an adult female goat weighs about 25 to 30 kg.
- Twinning and Triplets are possible in this breed.
Kodi Adu Goat Breed:
- This breed is mainly seen in Tamil Nadu state.
- The coat color of this breed is predominantly black. However, can be found with different colors as well.
- These goats are taller in size.
- These goats are raised for the purpose of guiding the goat flocks.
Changthangi Goat Breed:
- These breed goats are predominantly white and the rest are brown, black and gray.
- These goats yield delicate fiber.
- This breed posses small ears which are pricked and pointed outwards.
- These goats will have large horns turning inward, upward and outward farming a semicircular.
- The average weight if an adult male goat is about 20 to 22 kg whereas an adult female goat weighs about 18 to 20 kg.
- The first kidding starts at the age of 20 to 22 months and the kid once a year.
- Normally these goats give birth to singles.
Chegu Goat Breed:
- Chegu goat breeds are predominantly white in color, but greyish red and mixed colors can be found.
- An adult male goat weighs about 36 to 40 kg and an adult female goat weighs about 26 kg.
- Birth weight of 2 kg can be expected in these goats.
- These kids once in a year and mostly singles.
- These breeds have average lactation period of 6 months.
- These goats are used for a drought to carry small loads.
- These goats have long hair with an undercoat of fiber below.
- These goats have small ears, legs are medium. Face and muzzle are tapering.
- Generally, these goat horns are bent backward, outward and upward with one or more twists.
