If you have livestock on your farm, it is inevitable that you will at some point have to transport them from one point to another. No matter what the circumstances of this travel, you want to make sure that the trailer you are storing the animals in is in the best shape possible.
The last thing you want is to hit the road, only to find out that there is a flat tire or the lock on the trailer does not function properly. By taking the time to inspect the trailer and following a few simple guidelines, you will be able to minimize the risk to you and the animals.
Here are a few trailer safety tips:
- Check the tire pressure: Before you hit the road, you want to make sure that all of the tires, including the spares, are as filled as possible. Treat the tires the same as you would your car and keep and eye on them, as the amount of weight from the animals can wreak havoc on weak tires.
- Double-check the latch: To keep the animals secure in the trailer, the latch must be correctly shut. Don't be afraid to check it a few times to make sure it is snugly in place.
- Replace wheel bearings regularly: The last thing you want in the bearings is a buildup of moisture, so they need to be replaced at least once a year or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. This will help the wheels to operate without any issues.
