Salvia, fuchsia and heather pot

September is the perfect time to plant up a colourful pot to extend the season of colour in your garden.

Of course, you can plant this earlier in the year, too, as the fuchsia, heather and salvia will be in flower from midsummer. Once the display is past its best, transfer all the plants to the garden – all are hardy.

You can also be experimental with the container you plant in. While we’ve gone for a classic terracotta pot, there are lots of ways to upcycle containers for the garden.

Find out how to plant up this zingy salvia, fuchsia and heather pot, below.

You Will Need

Step 1

Add peat-free multi-purpose compost to the container until it’s two thirds full. Break up any large lumps.

Step 2

Position one plant at a time, carefully removing them from their pots. Create a front and back to the display, from shortest to tallest.

Step 3

Fill gaps between plants with compost and water the container well. Don’t let the compost dry out.
