The first Vision Robotics Lettuce Thinner was delivered in October 2012 and has been in operation since then. The lettuce thinner uses cameras to identify each lettuce seedling and sprays the unwanted plants to kill them. The thinner can use a variety of chemicals to kill the lettuce including fertilizer and offers several advantages when compared to manual thinning. The Vision Robotics design is highly modular, easy to maintain and configurable both at purchase and by the growers in the field. The number of lines, frame configuration, electrical, fluid and multiple chemical sprays are all options available.
Mechanical thinning has many benefits including significant cost reduction when compared to hand labor; increases in quanity, uniformity and yield, fewer weeds and a reduction in fertilizer. The VR Lettuce Thinner can operate at up to 2 - 3 acres per hour at an operating cost as low as $30 per acre. Depending on use, payback can be in the period of months.
