New Lawn Care: A Guide to Healthy Growth in New Zealand

Starting a new lawn is an investment and the first weeks are critical. Consistent watering, careful mowing and proper feeding are key to strong roots and even growth.

Watering a newly sown lawn

Newly sown lawns are vulnerable to drying out. Consistent moisture during germination and early establishment is critical. If the seed dries out at this stage, it won't recover and the lawn will be patchy.

Once the grass is visible and growing:

Mowing new lawns

Lawns will appear patchy in the first few weeks of growth but thicken up over time. A higher mower setting encourages strong root growth.

Feeding new lawns

Fertilise lawns from spring through to autumn when grass is actively growing.
