When a bird collides with a window, the impact can be devastating for the animal and unsettling for homeowners. Unfortunately, clear glass often mirrors the sky and surrounding trees, misleading birds into thinking they can fly straight through. Fortunately, a quick and inexpensive solution can give your feathered neighbors the visual cue they need to stay safe.

All you need is a white paint marker designed for glass—such as the Auto Drive automotive window marker, which costs around $3 to $6. By drawing clear, wide lines on the exterior of the glass, you transform the reflective pane into an unmistakable obstacle that birds can easily see and avoid.

Not only is this method cost‑effective, but it also offers flexibility: vertical, diagonal, or horizontal lines all work, and you can experiment with grids or even simple designs as long as the entire pane is covered. Besides preventing accidental collisions, the pattern can deter birds from approaching or attacking the window, reducing stress for both the bird and you.

How to Apply the Pen Trick for Maximum Effect

For best results, paint on the outside of the window. White lines stand out against reflected skies and trees, making the glass unmistakable. Vertical lines are typically the most effective, but a dense grid or dotted pattern can also be used, especially for smaller species like hummingbirds.

Key guidelines:

If you don’t have a paint pen, a soap bar can serve as a temporary marker, though it may require more frequent touch‑ups due to flaking. Consider relocating birdbaths and feeders: keeping them within 3 feet of a window can reduce collision risk, while placing them over 30 feet away also provides a safety buffer.

By following these simple steps, you can protect local bird populations and create a safer environment for everyone.
