Types of vegetable gardens

In general, most vegetables divided into two categories. They are Cool-season crops and Warm-season crops.

Cool-season crops

You can generally sow cool-season crops directly in the garden as soon as the soil is workable and the garden beds are prepared. Most of these cool-season vegetables are easy to grow.

Some cool-season crops are Onions, Lettuce, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Peas, Radishes, Turnips, and Spinach.

Cool-season vegetables are further categorized as hardy and half-hardy.

Hardy vegetables are the coldest tolerant and they can be planted 2 to 4 weeks before the date of the average last frost in spring; their seeds will germinate in cold soil and seedlings can endure short freezes. Some of the hardy vegetables include asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, chives, collards, corn salad, garlic, horseradish, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, mustard, onions, parsley, peas, radishes, rhubarb, rutabaga, spinach, and turnips.

Half-hardy or semi-hardy vegetables grow when the minimum temperature range is between 40ºF and 50ºF (5-10ºC). Half-hardy vegetables contain beets, carrots, cauliflower, celery, celeriac, chard, Chinese cabbage, chicory, globe artichokes, endive, lettuce, parsnips, potatoes, salsify, sorrel, and hardy herbs.
